FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Change of Venue for ‘Galactic Symphonies’ and ‘The Magic Hand’.

BHASVIC steps in and saves the production. ‘Galactic Symphonies’:
a new collaboration, a multi-media event spoken word by Stephen John Kalinch; music and voice by Richard Durrant projections / lights / installations / the works by Malcolm Buchanan-Dick ‘Galactic Symphonies’
- this unique collaboration was developed to be performed in unusual spaces, making use of the history and architecture of its surroundings to present the inspirational words of Los Angeles poet Stephen John Kalinich, guitar virtuoso Richard Durrant and light artist Malcolm Buchanan-Dick. Looking around Brighton and Hove, to produce this event during Brighton Fringe Festival, the trio and promoter Paul Adsett earmarked the most unusual and intriguing site … the British Engineerium in Hove.

This grand old Victorian Pumping Station,
with its large beam engine, had housed a collection of steam engines until its closure in 2006. Due to be auctioned off piecemeal, local businessman Mike Holland stepped in and purchased the entire collection and buildings. Since then work has been carried out, preparing the splendid site for reopening as a museum and prestige venue, though the planned official relaunch is not yet scheduled. That was not going to prevent the Galactic Symphonists from attempting a veritable coup…

They approached owner Mike Holland, whose Cherrywood Investments is renovating the Engineerium and got this permission to utilise the building for these performances. They would, in effect, preview the venue, offering the public a chance to see the Engineerium in a complete new light before its official relaunch. Ambitious? Certainly. So, it was all systems go, crank up the steampower and develop the show. The early weeks of 2008 saw the crew clambering about the building, testing the acoustics, eying up the old boilers, fine ironwork and working out lighting and video angles. All was going well - the events were registered in the Fringe Festival; initial fliers targeted the launch day of Brighton Festival proper… pre-empting the launch of the Fringe brochure some weeks later. But, time ran out on the ’Galactic Symphonies’ project when, on Tuesday, two days before the formal launch on thursday, it became clear that, despite the best efforts of the project manager, the building would not have received its necessary licences in time for showtime.

They contemplated the opportunity from Cherrywood to make use of Stanmer House, but, despite its own indisputable beauty, they struggled with incorporating the show into that venue and all seemed doomed. Much praise has to be given to BHASVIC, that impressive redbrick college on Dyke Road, which offered to house ‘Galactic Symphonies’ at, quite literally, the last moment. Paul Adsett, an old boy of that old Grammar School, still remembered his performance as a fairy in Gilbert and Sullivan’s ‘Iolanthe on the stage in that Big Hall and contacted the college on Wednesday. Without needing to utter the old school motto ‘Absque Labore Nihil’ (though he did indeed do so), the deal was done and ‘Galactic Symphonies’ was saved.

The Hall with its grand panels depicting history in Sussex, will offer a suitable space and scope to allow this exciting new show to unfold with its companion piece, another unusual programme of SJK poems ‘The Magic Hand’.

"Basketball Is Like Poetry" - AUDIO |

Every beautiful day
I realize each day is a gift
each precious second I am alive
I do not know the number of my days.
  I surrender
I know that no one knows
When this life will be silenced.
  Visit the sick
  Help the homeless
  A twist of fate
  That could be you
  Their in the cold
  On the street corner
With a hat or a paper cup
  On the ground
  Hoping for assistance
  Or money for booze
  Gentle pain forgive me
  Destiny understands
  That all is not just-
  That atoms swirling
  Are a blind
  Welcome
Vengeance is a dead end journey-
  Enter the narrow way
  Where so few go
  There is no escape
We all fall into madness or disarray
  The cells that compose us
  Disintegrate
  Fall apart
  Explode
  Blow up
The days and nights are limited
  All that rises must fall
  This
  Is the stain
  Born imperfect
  Ready to sin
  Individuals eek out a living
  Finding no where to hide
  No where to rest
To stay away from the storm
  To discover something new
  Within you
  This moment
It is not all blind ambition or chance
  Variety
  A jungle of thoughts
  With no mental machete
  To cut through the bush
   All is yearning
  Justice demands a reckoning
  Every cheater must reform
  Make good
  Their transgressions
EVERY SOUL MUST PAY THE PENALTY
Of their own mistakes and  miscalculations
There is a way in the wild
That no man or woman travels
  The way of the calm
  Restorer
That seeks not rewards or riches
Somewhere in the center of A life
  Is a fever
  That never wears out
  That does not cool down
  The fever with no remedies
  No cures
The fever is the life that always weeps
  Because it knows
  This is its one dance
  That now is ever thing
  Every path to every door.

Tenderness touching me
  Bringing life
Letting it flow through all my veins and arteries
Let it it unblock all blocks
  Shrink all growths and tumors
  Reverse  reflux and anxiety,
  Hold this in consciousness
  And then let it go
  All changes
All become other than it is now
  No state is constant
  Eat soft foods easily digestible
Food that flow through the system
  Relax
  Visualize your body restoring itself
  Coming back into whole wholeness
  Better yet
  See your body as whole
  And any thing painful
  Or uncomfortable
As a sheet that has to be washed
A quilt that has to be removed
Because it has no reality or substance to it
Do not accept the claim it makes upon you
Or you allow it to make upon you.
  You participate in your healing.
  Question your pain
  Do not blindly accept it.
Inspiration rises up out of silence
  And breathing slowly.
  Releasing all the toxins.
  Cleansing the inner organs
  And the body
Sooth the soul the body the mind
  Quiet the agitated sense
  Let go of it
  Fall into your breath
  Lightly
Do not bump against the walls that you create
  Feel them as soft pillows
Wherever there is pain in your body or discomfort
Love it and let it go.
Do not hold on to agitation or soreness
  Discomfort.
  We over complicate our lives
  By not letting each moment
  Each day be fresh.
We carry our problems around like weights
This is not helpful to our health or our being.
  The organism that we are-
  A chord sweeps over me
  An inspiration
A melody goes through the center of my being
Harbor no ill will towards anyone
  Even if they hate you
Do not give them that power to affect your moods
  Do not engage them
Love them and let them go
  Put a circle
  A  protection around yourself
  Do not let them enter
Even if you fight your enemy
Do not do it with rage
  Stay in command
  Do not react
Let your attack be from peace
  Not from anger or violence.
Enter into your own heart and soul with lightness
See the weight or problem as nothing
  As air that is evaporating
See it as unable to reach your peace
  Come from peace inner peace
  And go to peace.
All is good all has a lesson to teach
  Each experience
Can be a road to realization
  Value inner wisdom that spontaneously
  Comes out of you
But do not share this immediately
  Sit wit it
Let it grow and become strong within you
Master it before you share it.
People learn more from your example
  The way you live
  The way you handle situations
Than all the words you speak.
  Establish principles of survival
And surrender to what is good within you.
  Tread sweetly on the earth
Do not damage the land or the air
Halt all the aggression you feel
Convert it into a weapon of peace
  Be warriors for good
  Together we can understand
  Grace
  Together we can
  Thrive

HAPPY NEW YEAR

DECEMBER 2007
"The Magic Hand"
-- a song cycle by Stephen Kalinich and Pablo Escande -- performer Sytse Buwalda.

They met via a painting, "The Magic Hand." hanging in Drake’s hotel, which included the words
of a poem. Now Dutch counter-tenor Sytse Buwalda and Los Angeles poet Stephen Kalinich
have teamed up with Argentinian composer Pablo Escande to create a song cycle of
Stephen’s poems.

Stephen, who worked recently with local guitarist Richard Durrant, has written for The Beach
Boys, Brian Wilson, Brightonian David Courtney and many Motown artists.

Sytse’s recordings include the entire Bach Cantatas. He performs opera, oratorios and leider
internationally. Holidaying inBrighton, Sytse fell in love with the painting by local artist
Julie-Anne Gilburt and Stephen.

Emails flew between Sytse and Stephen before they met here and the instant spark between
singer and writer led to this new work. And what better place to unveil "The Magic Hand" than at
Drakes.

On 31st January they will preview this piece, which will be performed during Brighton Festival 2008.

stephen john kalinich,
poet (and more - much more)
  currently over-wintering in sunny brighton,
far from the balmy climes of los angeles.
many of you will have met stevie
and, well, what can one say?
a poet is not just for christmas, he's for life!
longtime collaborator with the beach boys,
stevie's the only person to have written with each wilson brother,
carl, dennis and brian, who is still a dear friend.
stevie and brian wilson's 1969 poetry / music collaboration
' a world of peace must come'
remains a hidden treasure awaiting release.
  stevie's songs including
'be still, 'little bird', 'california feelin'',
'child of winter', 'you've touched me',
'all i wanna do', 'a time to live in dreams', 'rainbows'
  percolate their albums.
'a friend like you' is the only duet on disc
by brian wilson and paul mccartney.
mr kalinich was also a staff writer at motown
and wrote for mary wilson, diana ross, randy crawford...
he has children's songs and characters under his belt(!?)
and jazzstyle recordings with jez graham.
  with brightonian david courtney
(he of leo sayer, roger daltrey, adam faith fame)
stevie had a disco hit 'magic touch' for odyssey.
and he has songs with his good friend
  the simply amazing p.f. sloan
  on sloan's recent 'sailover' album,
which saw this 'legend' well and truly return.

stevie k was over here in brighton last year and played a couple of dates
(including one with mr durrant, which led to this new project)
did some painting (and developed a liking for it, oh yes!)
with noted local artist julie-anne gilburt,
hung out with some excellent musical chaps
and made lasting contacts with the locals.
he clearly got the performance bug, since,
on his return to l.a., he was up onstage at clubs.

we had some ideas about taking stevie's stuff to a different level...
he was chomping at the bit to get back to brighton
  and - here he is!
back in the southcoast city he loves,
  now ensconced in the studio,
sculpting a multi-media show which features
  sjk poetry,
  rd music,
projections / lights / installations / the works by malcolm buchanan-dick.
  there will be downloadable recordings
and a nicely packaged cd in the works.
the club date will be filmed
and there will be product deriving from that show
which you will be able to  buy and treasure.
we also aim to use that video to publicise the show and get further bookings...
keep an eye out for festival events next year!

  it's sounding so good.
we're all excited by what's emerging.
we're all keen to unveil it to the world...
and that's what's about to happen!
it is part of the regular shoreham 'airport club',
  which always includes several acts,
  all eager to perform there.
this month, for instance, you will also find
that one-man-band busking chap don partridge, no less!

here's your chance to get in early on the 'galactic symphonies'
  and tell your grandchildren
  'i was there!'

ah, yes... and we're so so chuffed!

Message:

i'm really glad the movie camera
behind which i was propped
had auto-focus
- tears were welling up during the show!

thanks, brian, for those words.
it's difficult,
when you're very, very closely
involved with a project,
to be dispassionate about it...
i can't be
(and my hyperbole would be well filtered out)
'cos it's been something we've been planning
over the past year
- with a sudden rush to fruition
over the last 6 weeks.

thanks so much for the response.
the feedback has been so so good
from everyone there last night
- it works and it'll grow!

if any of you are at a loose end
on monday evening
and anywhere near shoreham by sea
on the south coast
(ropetackle centre right by the bridge
just along from sunny brighton),
we're filming further during the day
and 'galactic symphonies' is performed again
before an invited audience @ 8pm.
if you read this, you're invited.

i'll happily tell more another day
- just back from a touchingly grand gig
by the wondrous kate rusby
and pretty much sh@gged out
after buzzing for 48 hrs.

cheers, all

Richard Durrant : http://richard-durrant.com/ |
richard durrant is a local boy,

guitar whizzo, equally at home with
- rodrigo's guitar concerto @ albert hall
or with the brighton youth orchestra
- tv guitar tutoring on bbc tv's 'classical star'
- bach recitals
- taking over guitar slot from john williams in 'supergroup' sky
- live layered loops
- early music romps with attila the stockbroker
-  his own 'longman records' label
whereon you may hear many an artist's work
(some, indeed, eccentric)
- steve reich electric convolutions
- the ukelele orchestra of great britain
- folkier style collaborations with ungagged
- duo's with bassist superhero herbie flowers
- oh... and there's that british airways ad,
the acoustic 'pearlfishers' piece.
you'd hear his guitar every time you took the monorail
between gatwick airport terminals
(i told him he should sit on it and busk - would make a fortune)
and i heard it just the other day when the phone was put on hold by ba
(oops, carried away there... where was i?)...

cheers

Be still in your kindness
  Wear your good deeds lightly
Dance as much as you can
  Cherish the inward beauty
  Judge after careful consideration
But rather than judging use discernment
Help those who do not drain you
Do not carry the burdens of another
It will weigh you down -
  Develop inner wealth
Make grace your approach to decisions
Weed out the thoughts that are negative
Be realistic but still have hope
You can do more than you know.
You can choose happiness so much of the day.

  Kindness

Stevie Kalinich - live on BBC Radio on Sunday December 9, 2007

Sunday midday (uk time) on BBC southern counties radio. on gordon astley's radio show broadcast live from sunny brighton, stephen john kalinich, poet currently of this parish, appears as guest. he gets to recite and chat about... well, whatever comes to mind -- doubtless stevie will mention the 'galactic symphonies' show with guitar whizzo richard durrant that gets its public unveiling on friday next week. he'll pick five songs that mean something special to him and one 'stinker' (place your bets).

stevie did a 50 minute slot on local community radio reverb the other week and gets a further outing on the airwaves, spreading his somewhat unique vibe across a wider net on the bbc.

i'll be sitting (quietly?) in the studio and fully intend to enjoy the experience! you, my dears, may listen on fm radio if you're in the catchment area, or, indeed, listen via jolly old internet anywhere in the world either live or via 'listen again' merely by going online on the bbc.

cheers one and all

P.F. Sloan -- new album "Sailover"
"It took us 40 years to get together," Sloan says with a laugh, referring to his collaboration on two songs with lyricist Steve Kalinich. "Steve wanted to work with me back in 1966, but it didn't happen. Not long ago, he asked if I'd put music to a meditation book he'd composed. It was 250 pages of blank verse. I said, 'I'll do it if I can find one magic chord that holds everything together.' "I got the guitar, found this diminished chord and reworked the verses so they rhymed. I called Steve and said, 'You're in luck.' " The meditation became the touching ballad "If You Knew."
